The government has approved the removal of the anti-impotence drug Viagra from the market, as it has been accused of failing to provide a prescription for the medicine.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has also removed a number of other medicines from the market, including a pill that had been sold in Britain for an estimated $2.5m.
The MHRA said it had received reports of a problem with a Viagra tablet that had been ordered in the Netherlands and Singapore. It was due to be removed from the market in November.
The MHRA said it had received the complaints but had not given the order.
It said it had no alternatives to Viagra, or any other impotence drug, which has been linked to serious side effects including heart problems and death.
In August 2013, a study found that men who used sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) had a 1.9 per cent increased risk of cardiac events. The findings were confirmed by the MHRA on 14 April.
